Dire Straits is a British rock band formed in Deptford in the summer of 1977 by Mark Knopfler, his brother David Knopfler, John Illsley and Pick Withers.

Their music was characterised by the use of Mark Knopfler’s guitar, which was often accompanied by intricate and melodic guitar solos, as well as the use of instruments such as the accordion and saxophone. The band enjoyed great commercial success with songs like “Sultans of Swing”, “Money for Nothing”, “Walk of Life” and “Brothers in Arms”. Their album “Brothers in Arms” became one of the best-selling albums in history, selling over 30 million copies worldwide.

Dire Straits’ style has been described as a mixture of rock, blues and country, and their music inspired many other artists in the 1980s and 1990s. The band broke up in 1995, but Dire Straits’ music continues to be heard and enjoyed by many fans around the world.
